DeWanna Bonner

DeWanna Bonner might as well be in the last few games before she retires from the WNBA. And, it is clear as day that Bonner wants to end her run with a title win, which was the main reason why she left the Mercury for Atlanta after the former failed to get a playoff ticket.

Bonner seems to have made the right choice while choosing Atlanta, considering that the team has already emerged as massive favorites in the finals against the Golden State Valkyries. Despite her entry into the Atlanta locker room being quite late in the season, Bonner has already established herself as a well-respected leader, leading Angel Reese to praise her attitude in a recent chat with reporter Reggie Chatman Jr.

Reese knows that Bonner has quite the resume when it comes to appearing in the finals, with the baller making it to the playoffs five times. The icon may have won two titles, but also knows well enough what can go wrong for a team at the last minute. With this in mind, Bonner has not stopped reminding the Dream players that they need to put in a lot more effort when it comes to training.

“She’s great. She keeps us humble. She actually tells us, like, ‘This is not enough.’ We were happy, obviously, going to the finals. She was like, ‘This is not enough.’ She’s been swept before, and she knows what that feels like. So, she wants to make sure we’re ready.” Angel Reese said.

I love that DeWanna Bonner is using her experience and expertise to pull the Dream team ahead. This is exactly what any team needs in a leader. Bonner showed that she is capable of guiding and directing the others when Allisha Gray was absent for a few games.

Additionally, she also showed that she is capable of pulling back and following a leader’s orders even though she might be the more experienced one. These qualities are something that every athlete needs to emulate if they are an aspiring team leader.

DeWanna Bonner ending her season as an Atlanta player was most definitely not in anyone’s bingo cards for 2026. Her presence in the team has also made it difficult for the Valkyries and their strategy.

Natalie Nakase and her girls have not had the privilege of playing against the Dream with Bonner. This means they will be entering the finals a little short on experience. This will be a huge plus for Atlanta, something that the team needs to make good use of this weekend.
