Sophie Cunningham has been one of Fever’s most phenomenal players this season, with the baller easily becoming Indiana’s second-most popular player apart from Caitlin Clark. Cunningham has managed to gain a massive audience as a result of her looks, her remarks and her political takes, especially from the right gaining her the name of MAGA-Barbie.

Unfortunately, Cunningham’s numbers from this season have not matched up. In the very last game of the season, Cunningham barely coughed up five points for Indiana, despite playing for 24 minutes in total.

This might make many wonder if Cunningham might actually be happy with her performance this season, with the baller having a dull 8.3 point average in this basketball year. However, in going through many remarks that Cunningham shared over her career, it can actually be safe to say that the hooper may be quite happy with the way this season has ended for herself.

“I am not ignorant. I know that if you use this platform, you can, once the ball stops bouncing, you’re setting yourself up for success, and the players need to start doing that because we don’t make enough money.” Sophie Cunningham said a few months back on the ‘Sons and Daughters of Dale Earnhardt Jr.’ show.

Basically, Sophie Cunningham is not too focused on improving her basketball skills per se, but quite intent on milking the publicity that the league gives her. For a bench player on a one-year deal with the Fever, this is actually a smart tactic for the baller who is eager to make more money.

Throughout the season, Cunningham has constantly brought the spotlight to herself. Who can forget the whole trans-athlete debate, which was essentially kicked off because of comments she made during an interview, or her finger-pointing which went viral? Such incidents have made Cunningham a delectable case-study on how the right marketing can boost any athlete’s career, even if their performance may be sub-par.

Sophie Cunningham’s Approach May Not Work For All

Sophie Cunningham is undoubtedly a mentally-tough player, with her ability to stay strong amidst so many controversies and plenty of drama being a truly commendable thing. The baller knows only too well that she will never be a Caitlin Clark or a Paige Bueckers or an A’ja Wilson. Instead, the Fever hooper has created a reputation for her non-basketball antics, which has even got her a shoe-deal with Adidas, amongst many other business opportunities.

Cunningham has been smart enough to identify that she can easily become a fan-favorite by kindling the right arguments and spouting her bold takes. As someone who works with all types of athletes, I would definitely recommend to take notes form Cunningham. At the same time, this is not something that all athletes can use, especially those who are introverted and would prefer to stay away from unnecessary drama.
